Oak Workbench

Jeffrey T. Kastner | February 18, 2022

I built myself a workbench out of free oak pallets, that a local company would otherwise have to pay to get rid of. Of course they also had 4 foot x 4 foot x 1/2 inch sheets of plywood so all I had to do was buy the screws. Repurposing this oak was a great way to up-cycle!

I won’t go into measurement details, but there are a few I would like to share! The height I chose to go with was an overall height of 39 inches. The overall length was 8 feet, that makes a perfect fit for the two 48 inch (4 foot) sheets of plywood. The lower shelf height is 9 inches, and that left me with just enough room to get a broom underneath and plenty of room for storage. When deciding the depth, again I chose to utilize the entire 48 inch plywood sheet. So, with the leg thickness of 3 1/2 inches (7 total, between the front and back legs) that gave me 27 1/2 inches for the top of the workbench and 20 1/2 inches for the lower shelf.

To finish things off I added the electrical outlet because there wasn’t an outlet on that side of the basement. (It cost me roughly $12)
